Presentation Overview:

This talk will identify various methods that Creative Technology students and researchers at the University of Regina are engaging with data driven culture and identify how working within this industry is affecting change and building community across local and national society.

‘Riding Through Walls’ is a new research-creation project in – duration performance in physical computing; a mash-up of terms drawn from fine art and computer science that express the hybrid space that the work sits within. The performance takes shape as a cross-Canada expedition through Google Street-View from behind the bars of a stationary bike. “This is an 18-month performance on ‘Air Wing’, a networked stationary bicycle that propels me visually through Google map layers at pedaling speed. I am also wearing a Google Glass to take postcard images along route that can be immediately shared with audiences through social media and the performance is broadcast via live stream on YouTube and Google.”

Biography

Dr. Megan Smith is a new media artist, curator and academic. She holds a PhD from the School of Contemporary Art and Graphic Design, Faculty of Art, Environment & Technology, Leeds Beckett University and is Assistant Professor in Creative Technology and Adjunct in Visual Arts, within the Faculty of Fine Arts and the University of Regina. Her recent research projects include ‘Travelling to the Frontier of Creativity’, new research routed in understanding and contributing to DIY & Maker Culture and Open-Source sharing networks. This work involves building a series of durational performances using customizable emerging technologies while critiquing the capacity of corporate communication platform’s ability to humanize data. Two current works in the series are ‘Riding Through Walls’ and ‘Adrift’. In these projects Smith uses various Google applications and maps, internet services and products such as the Google Glass as a mechanism for making work, connecting with new community world-wide, and socially testing the monetization system of building art works within this industry force.
